The union busting firms are scared

As a fine dining cook, I found work in a union workplace around a year ago.

My 40 hours a week are guaranteed except for Jan/feb/mar when there’s not enough customers, I get paid almost twice what I did at any other restaurant, if I work overtime, (more than 8 hours in one day, or more than 40 in a week), I actually get overtime pay, (and it’s 1.5x my normal rate!).

I get holiday pay, and in addition I get to either bank or pay out my holidays if I work those days, (either a paid day off when I want it, in addition to the holiday pay, or I get paid an add’l 8 hours at 1.5x that week). I also get two floating holidays, 4 paid random sick days, 2 paid family sick days, and 4 paid “doctor’s note” sick days, (paid out by our health insurance), as well as general allowance to take as many unpaid sick days as I want without worrying for my job security. (I’ve been told that taking multiple months off is where we start to be concerned about abuse, so if I want to do that, I can go through our leave of absence procedures instead, where I’m allowed three 2-week periods a year generally for whatever reason I want, (If my manager wants to disagree, he has to get the union president’s approval), and after that it’s up to my manager to decide if he’ll accept them).

I get two weeks of paid vacation time a year, and an add’l week per year for every 5 years I work there.

We get our legally mandated breaks, which, I know that sounds like a low bar, but taking anything other than a smoke break in a kitchen?!?! Unheard of! I get two 15′s and a lunch every shift! I get to sitdown and rest my legs and not get flak for it!

I get a bonus at the end of the year, there’s official procedures for if my manager isn’t happy with me or wants to get rid of me, (three meetings, during which my union representative has to be present), (and getting rid of my classification doesn’t work, there’s rules for how someone ‘bumps’ other people if classifications are gotten rid of), and severance pay for when full-time employees that are downsized out of the company, there’s a pension plan, like …
Guys, I have a 40-page handbook which details all of the rights my union has won me, and believe me, I’ve never had any of these at any prior workplace.

And you know what my union dues are? $4 a paycheck.

Of course I’m going to pay my union dues for all of those benefits.

Reblogging for this incredibly thorough explanation of what it’s like to actually have a contract in place at a union workplace. I reblog a fair number of posts about how people should organize, but if you’re like me, you might not know exactly what that can get you until you’ve actually gone through the process. Every contract is different because you bargain for what makes sense for your particular workplace, and every few years you re-negotiate with the employer to improve things in the next contract, but some things (like the right to have union representation when you talk to your boss about leave or discipline) are universal.

It’s worth every penny of your dues, I promise.

YOU know that drag performers aren’t usually trans people. *I* know that.

Right-wingers don’t. The attacks on drag shows are anti-trans attacks.

Most right wing people do not make any notable distinction between trans people, drag performers, crossdressers, and gender non-conforming people, because to them we are all just people who are dressing up as/acting like the “wrong gender”

It is kinda hard to do or claim ‘Death of the Author’ on a property when even if uninvolved the author still gets royalties and is known to parade sales of products related to her creation as ‘proof people agree with me and my views’ unfortunately.

hiemalice:

Let me put it in simple explanation for all you brainless peeps out there:

Lovecraft: creator is dead and therefore makes no profit off work and is not given a platform to spread hate, okay to buy and talk about.

FNAF: creator makes profit and has funded conservative campaigns but does not use his voice to support it so its okay to pirate and talk about.

Harry Potter: creator is actively making profit off of and using the popularity to continue hate. will NOT stop spreading hate even if money is stopped through pirating, therefore not okay to buy, pirate, or talk about.

I hope this is fucking simple enough.

simply-sweetness:

“wow i can’t believe a trans cat girl hacked and leaked the no-fly list. the way we came about this information is so absurd, it’s funny” 🤝 “the actual information that was leaked is abhorrently racist, specifically towards middle eastern and south asian people. that is absolutely not funny and needs to be spoken about without the absurdity of the situation dominating the conversation”

royalhandmaidens:

instead of arguing about the no-fly list and the memes it spawned, please consider donating to CAIR (Center for American Islamic Relations) or the CCR (Center for Constitutional Rights) to help my community

CAIR, specifically, is group of muslim lawyers who routinely represent muslim americans fighting for their legal rights - all for free

both groups have already won multiple cases for muslim americans who have been wrongfully profiled and surveilled by the government, and they’ve announced plans to take even broader legal initiative to protect our rights. it’s because of their work thus far that the supreme court recently ruled that muslims who have been wrongfully placed on no-fly lists are now allowed to sue the government for damages

we still have a long way to go, but organizations like these are doing so much work to make sure we get there

it’s been two years, but i think that an icon like her deserves to be known about by more people.

her name was freddie oversteegen and she, at the age of fourteen, along with her older sister truus who was 16 and their friend johanna “hannie” schaft who was 19, was a part of the netherlands most famous all female resistance cell which was dedicated to fighting the nazis and dutch traitors.

among other things, they are known to have blown up bridges and railroads, smuggled jewish children from concentration camps and, as the tweet mentions, seducing nazis and then shooting them with guns that they had hidden in their bike baskets. freddie is quoted as having said that they “had to do it.” and that it was a “necessary evil, killing those who betrayed good people.”

though freddie and her sister truus were both lucky and survived the war, hannie schaft wasn’t. at the age of 24, hannie was caught and around three weeks later was executed by nazis, only 18 days before the netherlands were eventually liberated. she was shot with one only wounding her, and, before the final shot, hannie is quoted as having told the executioners: ik schiet beter, which translates to “i shoot better.”

though she didn’t survive, hannie is recognized as a national icon and a face of the dutch resistance, with her story even being retold in a movie from 1981 called “the girl with the red hair.” along with this, truus also founded the national hannie schaft foundation in 1992, on which freddie served as a board member.

freddie, at the time of her death, was 92 years old and the last surviving member of the resistance cell, with truus having died two years earlier at the age of 92.

though these women and all that they did played an important part in the dutch resistance, they are often overlooked in history outside of the netherlands. it’s important that they are remembered and that their work to save people isn’t forgotten. it’s incredible what they did, especially given how young they were, and they deserve more recognition than what they’ve gotten.

“I shoot better” Holy shit an icon

I can’t stress enough how much the John Green debacle was an early example of how cancel culture and purity culture combine to make people feel righteously justified to engage in harassment.

John Green, during his time on tumblr, committed the heinous sins of…being neurodivergent and talking openly about it, earnestly interacting with fans in a very direct and unfiltered way, and writing about teenagers navigating first love and sexuality while he himself was an adult. The worst things he ever did were be a little cringe or misspeak, for which he was always prompt to apologize (often whether he really needed to or not).

Yet despite the former two being things tumblr claimed to love and the last one being true of 99.99% of YA authors, in this case a large segment of tumblr users steeped in the early 2010s resurgence of purity culture decided that these things were suspicious and predatory, and used that as an excuse to justify some truly awful behavior.

Which is really all that cancel culture is: the normalization and even celebration of the process of misapplying morality or ethics to dehumanize someone for the express purpose of justifying whatever pain and suffering you want to inflict upon them. Basically, deciding “this person is bad, so I am exempt from affording them basic respect and human dignity, and am allowed to cross any and all otherwise uncrossable lines in order to punish them without damaging my own moral or ethical standing.”

Contrary to popular tumblr lore, the infamous “cock monologue” was not the sum total of the harassment, or even the worst of it. Callout blogs issued long lists of “receipts” about how terrible John Green was, most if not all of which were either taken out of context or completely refutable. His works were torn to shreds by people who’d never read them, as evidenced by much of the criticism being obviously and blatantly counter to the actual contents of the books.

Not that it mattered. Once the John Green hate party reached a certain level of critical mass, it became less about who he actually was or what he’d done, and more about proving you were a good person by hating him. That’s the natural conclusion of cancel culture, after all: virtue signalling by identifying yourself in opposition to the cancelled parties. They’re bad, and I’m good, so I hate them! Or, more often: They’re bad, and I hate them, so I’m good!

Before it was over with, John Green had been accused, with no evidence, of being everything from a Nazi to a pedophile and subjected to hate mail and death threats. He eventually left the site for the sake of his own mental health, and because he no longer felt comfortable engaging directly with fans in the same way he once had.

Yet even now, with the benefit of hindsight, and even among those who ostensibly reject purity culture and condem bullying and harassment, very few on tumblr take what was done to John Green as seriously as it should be taken or condemn it as thoroughly as it should be condemned. Which I think is something we need to at least consider doing, given the increasing rise of purity and cancel culture online, and given the recent influx of professional creators eager to interact with fans on a more direct level than they have on other social media.

And my concern is not purely, or even primarily, for the Mike Flanagans and Lynda Carters of the world. I’m far more concerned, actually, for the small, independent or self-published creators in this space, and how much even a very small level of visibility gives too many people a feeling of carte blanche to engage in harassment.

I myself have less than 3k followers on here, a handful of popular posts, and zero notoriety or consequence outside of tumblr whatsoever, and I’ve been repeatedly told to kill myself for saying such innocuous things as “I don’t think censorship is the cure for the world’s evils” and “maybe learning the history of communities you want to participate in would be a good idea.”

Thankfully, all it took for me to stop the harassment that came my way was to block those few individuals. But there have been many instances over the years of small creators or just random tumblr users that got a bit popular being stalked, doxxed, swatted, and harassed to the point of leaving the site and dealing with serious mental health issues as a result. It has never been just John Green. John Green isn’t even the worst example. And tumblr has never learned its lesson.

The cock post was literally homophobic sexual harassment. A lot of people gloss over that.

[#I will never ever stop pointing out that the cock taste meme is homophobic. #what is the joke. what is the funny haha lul there. that a grown man is attracted to penises? projecting homosexuality onto him ENTIRELY #to degrade and mock him in a sexual manner. it’s homophobic sexual harassment. #and NO ONE CARES because they’re bullies desperate for an easy target #john green was the victim of a queerphobic and ableist harassment campaign and no one wants to admit it #because that would require admitting that knowing the buzzwords doesn’t stop you from enabling systemic violence. #and they don’t want to admit that a cishet white man was a victim of homophobic bullying. but he was. because there is just NO WAY to #justify the cock taste meme that doesn’t involve ignoring that the entire purpose of the joke is #“this man that we keep calling a pedophile is attracted to cocks and says gross things about them” #darlings. beloved tumblrinas. that’s middle school noughties homophobia at its peak. you’re all unfunny trash for this.]

Literally THIS WEEK had one of these people write an essay in my inbox about how

  • He harassed his teenage fans by being ‘creepy’ at them
  • Nothing bad happened to him at all except 'some teens edited his posts to include a penis joke’
  • The anonymous essay writer was going to 'hurt (themself)’ if John Green comes back to Tumblr because of 'suckup’ bloggers like me 'rehabbing his image’

So you know, these people are still about, still haven’t learned anything, and are still entirely fucking unhinged

Don’t forget he recently tweeted about the last straw for him was when someone sent him a picture of his house. Someone flat out doxxed him
